FedByDefault is built on behavioral science. Three separate bodies of peer-reviewed research point to the same conclusion. Here is what they found and what we built to address it.

01 — THE PROBLEM

Willpower is the wrong tool. 

Most advice about screen time asks you to try harder. Put the phone down. Set limits. Be more intentional. Take a break.

Researchers have studied what actually happens when people try this. The results are not encouraging.

A 2024 review published in Cureus tracked voluntary digital detox outcomes across multiple studies. The pattern was consistent. Initial enthusiasm followed by rapid rebound. People who relied on motivation and intention returned to baseline usage within days.

Willpower fails not because people are weak. It fails because it treats an external engineering problem as an internal character problem. The interface was built by teams whose only job was to defeat exactly the kind of resistance willpower produces.

Algorithm Awareness
A 2026 study tracked users who shifted from seeing a platform as a neutral social space
to seeing it as a system engineered to exploit their attention. 
Users were significantly more likely to change their
usage when they understood how their feeds were built. Learning who made the decisions, what the business model required,
how their behavior was being studied, had a durable impact.          Not because they were told to. Because understanding the mechanism made the automatic reach feel different.

Psychological Reactance

Psychologist Jack Brehm documented a human defense mechanism that activates the moment a person realizes something external is trying to control their choices. The
naive user sees a notification as a suggestion. The informed user sees it as an attempt
by an external system to claim their time. That reframe triggers a measurable behavioral
response. The informed user closes the app. The naive user keeps scrolling.

Technique Over Willpower

Researchers evaluating digital literacy programs found a consistent pattern. Teaching
people what to feel about screens produced short-term changes that faded. Teaching
people how the system works produced sustained behavioral change. When students
learned the specific mechanics of how engineering teams exploit cognitive
vulnerabilities for ad revenue their real-world screen habits changed. Not because they
were frightened. Because they understood the transaction.

Behavioral economists at the Wharton School spent years studying how quickly human trust
in automated systems collapses. The moment a person sees the mechanism behind a
recommendation, the moment the curtain moves, they begin to resist it. Not gradually.
Immediately.

This is why the book is structured as an interview. L'Stream does not explain the algorithm
from the outside. It confesses from the inside. The reader does not have to be convinced the
system is predatory. They hear it say so.

04 — HOW IT SPREADS

The oldest distribution system there is.

Research on digital literacy interventions points to one consistent finding. The most durable
changes happen when the framework is passed on by trusted adults in real relationships. Not
through content. Not through apps. Through a person in a room with people they actually
know.
The most effective way to spread this is the oldest way. A real person telling another real
person in a real conversation. That is also just true.
