Algorithm Awareness
A 2026 study tracked users who shifted from seeing a platform as a neutral social space
to seeing it as a system engineered to exploit their attention.
Users were significantly more likely to change their
usage when they understood how their feeds were built. Learning who made the decisions, what the business model required,
how their behavior was being studied, had a durable impact. Not because they were told to. Because understanding the mechanism made the automatic reach feel different.

Psychological Reactance
Psychologist Jack Brehm documented a human defense mechanism that activates the moment a person realizes something external is trying to control their choices. The
naive user sees a notification as a suggestion. The informed user sees it as an attempt
by an external system to claim their time. That reframe triggers a measurable behavioral
response. The informed user closes the app. The naive user keeps scrolling.

This is why the book is structured as an interview. L'Stream does not explain the algorithm
from the outside. It confesses from the inside. The reader does not have to be convinced the
system is predatory. They hear it say so.
04 — HOW IT SPREADS

Research on digital literacy interventions points to one consistent finding. The most durable
changes happen when the framework is passed on by trusted adults in real relationships. Not
through content. Not through apps. Through a person in a room with people they actually
know.
